Hikmet Jamil & coll. Wish to Protect US-American “White Youth” from Hookah in Study Published in the Nicotine & Tobacco [Antismoking] Research Journal

Going straight to the point and without listing again the classical series of huge errors, let’s say that apparently in order to justify the smoking ban in Michigan (USA), Hikmet Jamil and his colleagues from the University of Michigan (USA), have published an article in the Nicotine and Tobacco [antismoking] Research journal:

QUOTEWORTHY: "The fact that White youth increasingly appear to adopt hookah smoking is of great public health concern since it might be a new trajectory into cigarette smoking, as well as other gateway drugs (Duan, Chou, Andreeva, & Petnz, 2009 ). The risk of dispersion is especially great since hookah smoking is done in social groups and is cheaper than cigarettes (Roskin & Aveyard, 2009). The American Lung Association (ALA) actually."

Note: the cited reference are just as junk as the Jamil paper ! As for the editorial support, "Nicotine and Tobacco [antismoking] Research" is a Farmingtonian journal ! Farmingtonian, What’s this?

Haram-Treif Science Award to this journal and to Hikmet Jamil and his colleagues of the University of Michigan !

International Journal of Epidemiology Publishes Fatal Scientific Errors in Waterpipe"™ “Systematic Review” Hyping Health Hazards

“This is a critique of Elie Akl et al (University of New York at Buffalo) “Systematic Review” of the Cochrane type on the “Effects of Waterpipe Tobacco Smoking on Health Outcomes” recently published in the International Journal of Epidemiology (IJE).

The paper hypes the HAZARDS OF CANCER and the authors managed to select only the studies they saw relevant for their “assessment” of “health outcomes”, cancer in particular. As expected from antismoking researchers, they dismissed (details given in their “eligibility criteria”) the most relevant studies when they did not find a sufficient cancer risk.

Amazingly, they mostly relied on studies led in China based on water pipes workin with NO charcoal and in which tobacco is BURNT as in cigarettes, contrary to what the authors believed… This point is certainly not a detail because the chemistry of smoke is completely different…

As we pointed out elsewhere, the right place to discuss a controversial paper containing serious errors and biases is the journal in which it was published. Unfortunately, for political (and not scientific) reasons, this is not always possible.

When confronted with this problem, the IJE, a journal which has apparently adopted a clear antismoking line, rejected a critique of the flawed paper. Interestingly, they accepted a Letter [Comment from the Observatory: really vapid, man !] by Wasim Maziak, the [undeclared for 2 years] author of the WHO flawed report on ““waterpipe””™ smoking and renown ““waterpipe”” antismoking researcher...[cont. here]”

The authors have “conducted a systematic review using the Cochrane Collaboration methodology for conducting systematic reviews”. And d’you know what happened, folks ? Nothing but systematic errors and biases because of an antismoking agenda and an intent to save the face of the experts who prepared the WHO calamitous report !

CONCLUSION

As in the case of the rubbish Autralian story about pig blood in cigarette filters recently raised by antismoking activist Simon Chapman, the Observatory on Hookah or Health has decided to also grant similarly the “Haram Science” and “Treif Science” Award to the so-called “International Journal of Epidemiology”.

Unethical German Gas Chamber Study Published in the Food and Chemical Toxicology Journal

The Food and Chemical Toxicology journal has published so far a series of strongly biased studies on a ““waterpipe””™ smoking machine (US-American University of Beirut). It has now published a paper based on an unrealistic and unethical experiment led by a team of German experts from the Bavarian Health and Food Safety Authority, Bavarian Environment Agency, and the Federal Institute for Risk Asessment:

Hermann Fromme, Silvio Dietrich, Dieter Heitmann, Holger Dressel, Jürgen Diemer, Thomas Schulz, Rudolf A. Jörres, Knut Berlin, Wolfgang Völkel: Indoor air contamination during a waterpipe (narghile) smoking session. Food Chem Toxicol. 2009 Apr 23.

This experiment consisted in consecutive hookah smoking sessions FOR ABOUT 4 HOURS in a room of 20 m² (volume 57 m³) in which THE WINDOWS WERE KEPT CLOSED. The experts also used quick-lighting charcoal and a tiny amount of the smoking product to make things better.... By accepting to publish such a study (by the way full of other speculations about addiction, cancer and so on, not to mention the levels of toxic substances they have found), the Food and Chemical Toxicology journal has also endorsed the great hazards of the about 240 litres of smoke (*) to which the victims (called “volunteers” in the publication) have been exposed in the gas chamber: namely Christine MOSCH, Franziska NACHTMANN and Elcim SECKIN. According to an independent source, this constitutes a violation of the Helsinki Declaration on “Ethical Principles for Medical Research Involving Human Subjects”.

(*) 240 litres: calculated according to the standardized US-American University of Beirut smoking machine which represents the unanimous and world best model for hookah smoking. Hookah smoke contains the same carcinogens as those found in cigarettes. For memory, cigarette smoke -and therefore hookah smoke which has no scientific reason to be different- contains almost 5000 chemicals. Therefore, and since a single cigarette hardly generates 0.5 litre of smoke, the inflicted torture was that of smoking the equivalent of 480 cigarettes (240 : 0.5), each containing 5000 chemicals. The same source adds that “these human guinea-pigs were only thanked for “for their substan[t]ial support and for smoking the waterpipe”.

However, they were not informed that their life would be endangered and were not told why ventilation would not be allowed as it happens in all hookah (narghile, shisha) lounges of the world”.

CONCLUSION

1. Pray for Christine MOSCH, Franziska NACHTMANN and Elcim SECKIN. Write to them and advise them to bring the German Agencies and their ““waterpipe”” researchers to court.

2. All this in the name of Hookah Environmental Tobacco Smoke and Hookah Third Hand Smoke (forced charcoal emissions…) !

3. Question: What is hazardous for health: ““Waterpipe””™ smoke or ““Waterpipe””™ experts ?

4. Other question: Lies, Fake Reports, Fake Posters and Images, Lies again, Plagiarism, Junk Studies by the Dozens, Gas Chambers…. Where Will Antismoking Extremists Stop ?
