Off we are ! A New Study Reveals…

This is a service kindly offered by the BioMed Central Group which has adopted an open peer-review policy. BioMed Central is, notably, a member of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) that the readers of the Observatory on Hookah or Health know well.

Interestingly, BioMed Central also endorses the World Association of Medical Editors (WAME) Policy Statement on Geopolitical Intrusion on Editorial Decisions.

Despite all these praiseworthy precautions, BMC has apparently been fooled. How ? This is a mystery. Unaware, it has hired (or has let hire) for the job of peer-reviewing a manuscript: Wasim MAZIAK and Thomas EISSENBERG, who belong to the same team, the US-SCTS

What is more, and may amaze some people, is that the authors of the biased manuscript (Daniel JACKSON and Paul AVEYARD) share the same ideology as their pire-reviewers. Not convinced ? ““Waterpipe””™ is a not only a sociological code; it is a war code. Just have a look at the list of references in the full version of the “new study” (pdf).

In the Pre-publication history , you will also see, beside the English lesson given by Dr Maziak to his native English students (who, and this is very funny, don’t want to acknowledge that their mother tongue is so poor…), how the pire-reviewers suggest citing other partisan publications of their own team or similar ones.

At the end, about 20 bibliographical references out of 28 bear the ““waterpipe””™ war code. This is not all. Go to the Authors’ contributions section, following the conclusion. You will see who is Paul AVEYARD, one of both authors :

“The study was funded by the University of Birmingham and Paul Aveyard is funded by a NIHR Career Scientist Award”. He has received hospitality from various pharmaceutical companies, including those making products for smoking cessation. He has received consultancy income to him and his institution from Xenova Biotechnology, Pfizer, and McNeil AB for advice on smoking cessation.”

SO WHAT ? IS THE HAND OF BIG PHARMA BEHIND ?

Maybe. Probably... The picture above actually reflects a deep scientific, social, economic and geo-political analysis elaborated by FORCES . It seems consistent with the above-mentioned Policy Statement on Geopolitical Intrusion on Editorial Decisions
