"One tobacco-control bill got a friendlier reception than another Friday before the House Health Care Committee. House Bill 2726, whose chief sponsor is Rep. Carolyn Tomei, D-Milwaukie, would tighten Oregon's indoor-smoking ban to eliminate hookah lounges as a permitted exemption for smoke shops. The bill won support from the state epidemiologist, graduate students and high school students — although an owner of a hookah lounge objected." Etc....
and then come the killing sententious pithy comments by Senator Brian BOQUIST, R-Dallas:
"[...] state Sen. Brian Boquist, R-Dallas, said he teaches soldiers bound for the Middle East that hookah smoking is a ritual bringing together warring factions."
"If it works in their culture and they stop shooting at us, then we're going to adopt it," said Boquist, who served two tours of duty with the Army in Iraq. "I would encourage you to look at the cultural perspective."
"Boquist said that classifying nicotine as a prescription drug, as proposed by HB 2233, may have the unintended consequence of encouraging a greater black market in cigarettes ? some of the smuggling done by terrorist organizations ? from Canada into the United States."
