Has WHO Falsified Translation into Arabic in order to Avoid Outrage over Statement on Hookah Use by Children and Parents in the Arab World ?
Further to the increasing popularity of the critique of the Erroneous WHO 1st Expert Report on "Waterpipe"™ , has WHO (the World Health Organization) falsified translation from English into Arabic of the famous sentence:
“In South-West Asia and North Africa [in other words, the Arab World...], it is not uncommon for children to smoke with their parents” (page 4 of the WHO report) ?
“I showed that this argument has absolutely no scientific basis and I refuted it with relevant epidemiological and anthropological data” (kamcha)
« The key group of words “it is not uncommon for children to smoke with their parents” in the English original was rendered in Arabic by “Laysa b-il-amr-il-mustahjin ru‘yat atfal yudahhinuna ma’a aba‘i’him” which has definitely another meaning; more or less that “it is not shocking [and not that it is commonplace] to see children smoking with their parents”. I insist that the semantics of the sentence was deliberately changed by suppressing the key chronological (frequency) and epidemiological dimension of “not uncommon” (ibid.)
What may have been the reason behind such an "euphemism" in the Arabic report ? Certainly avoid the outrage of parents in “South-West Asia and North Africa”…
You knew that WHO “expert” reports (at least in the field of hookah smoking) are often sold to the broad public despite their numerous flaws and huge scientific errors. You now know that such errors can be “rectified” and their impact minimized thanks to the translation process.
Note that their translation is not automatic (as ours on the Observatory on Hookah and Health, we poor scientists working with our brains only), but carried on by an army of translators...
- Did you know that the translation budget of such a United Nations agency (whose 6 official languages are Russian, Chinese, French, English, Arabic and Spanish) can reach 30% and more of the total ?
- Who funds these highly-paid “experts” and translators ? You booby tax-payers…
