Hookah Smoking Cultural Problem First, Expert Says
"Shisha-Smoking: Alarming Trend Among Urban Youths". By Melati Mohd Ariff for Bernama (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia), June 14, 2006
Hookah smoking is much more a cultural problem than anything else. Dr Maamor spoke out, contrary to many of his colleagues all over the world:
1) "There's also the question of whether shisha-smoking is suitable with Malaysian culture"
NOTE: where the word "Malaysian" can be replaced by any other national adjective...
For a public health official in the same country, hookah smoking would be shocking because:
"The youngsters, including the girls, were not ashamed at all to smoke shisha in public. They seemed to be very proud smoking in that manner and looked so pleased when others watched them"...
2) "This culture is a waste of time and is also unhygienic as people take turns to smoke a shisha". Certainly, Dr Maamor.
3) "From the religious aspect, shisha-smoking also confuses the public with some passing it as 'halal', others say it's 'haram' while a number considers it 'makruh'"
Remember that Islam is a tolerant religion, Dr Maamor:
4) Finally, Dr Maamor said: "Shisha-smoking is like a small flame that can turn into a huge, raging bonfire if there are no checks and restrictions". Perhaps because of the burning charcoal... My God, this is the end of Times and Hookah is the Devil.
"CULTURE CLASH" ? NOT SURE... READ RELEVANT STORY IN THE US THIS TIME:

Shisha is being criminalized becuase it threatens traditional tabacco products. I once enjoyed many cigars daily. I quit. Now I smoke shisha. It's more enjoyable, smells better, and is less potent. Either way, regardless of health concerns, smocking shisha is a superior smoking experience, and far less expensive, in most instances, than cigars and cigs.
i've got to agree with the post above. cigarette companies have a lot to lose if people catch wind of how great shisha is. very good observation by anonymous above
