Rastam S, Ward KD, Eissenberg T and Maziak W. Estimating the beginning of the waterpipe epidemic in Syria. BMC Public Health 2004 ; 4:32.
Clarification by an independent researcher : "This paper defends a “scenario” for the development of shisha use in Syria. According to this “scenario”, the Arab information satellite TV channels would be greatly responsible for the development of the craze. This is not true."

Hookah smoking has become increasingly popular, especially among young females in Syria. There is a misconception that it is less harmful and less addictive then cigarette smoking. It is not. In fact one drag of the hookah is equivalent of smoking 10 cigarettes! Classical films like "Casablanca" and the myth of the Baghdad Caliphs which are invariably seen sitting with a hookah by their sides has further added to its popularity. But I think it is just a fad and will disappear on its own in 10-15 years.
No, "one drag of the hookah is equivalent of smoking" 200 cigarettes, not 10 !
